How to choose cleaning products

By Alice Sy

There is a wide variety of cleaning products available in the market today. Various cleaning products use different promotional materials showcasing their effectiveness. But how do we really choose which cleaning material is right for us, and how do we measure the effectiveness of a cleaning product?

First, you have to identify which item to clean. We use different cleaning solutions for specific materials like woods, glass, tiles, fabrics, etc. Using the wrong product may damage the surface of the item. Therefore, awareness of the materials to clean and knowledge of the product are very important.

Some cleaning products claim to be multi-purpose. They can be used in cleaning plastic, wooden surfaces and even glasses. However, in choosing cleaning products, it is very basic to check the effectiveness of the solution. Examine how spotless a glass cleaner can clean your mirror compared with a multi-purpose cleaner. Cleaning products for specific purpose are very effective in cleaning particular items. Thus, choose the right cleaning products for a specific surface.

To test the effectiveness of the cleaning product, make a trial application on small surface. See if it brings out the cleanliness you want to produce in your material. The cleaning product should bring out the best quality in your item. Try a small surface only the first time for damage control, just in case the product proves ineffective.

Effectiveness of cleaning products are also measured through continuous application over time. Consistent use of cleaning products should maintain the quality of the surface being cleaned. Strong chemicals contained in some cleaning products tend to damage the surface of the items being cleaned. In this case, this is not the right cleaning product to use.

We also have to consider our personal safety in using cleaning products. We should be aware of harmful substances used in manufacturing cleaning products. It is important to read instructions on how to use cleaning products properly, and be aware of what adverse effect they have in our health. Whenever possible, refrain from, or at least minimize, using such cleaning products.

It also helps to choose cleaning products which are environment-friendly. Substances which are organic, biodegradable or non-biodegradable are contained in all cleaning products. So we have to decide which one we prefer to use.

Choosing cleaning product is simple. Choose cleaning products that are effective and yet safe to use.
